Here we are in the end of November and I can hear the early cicadas singing. It is music to my ears.
You asked for a smaller dry fly pack for summer cicada season, so here it is. For me here in the Bay of Plenty, summer is all about the dry fly. It is also mostly about cicadas! I have been asked many times what would be the best dry flies to carry fishing from December to March? For me, it is simple; I would use cicada imitations or a parachute Adams. The following pack of 12 flies is what I would call essential for dry fly fishing BOP rivers or likely anywhere else this summer:
Deer Hair Cicada Olive sizes 6, 8, 10 and 12
Deer Hair Cicada Olive with Rubber Legs sizes 6, 8, 10
Deer Hair Cicada Black with Rubber Legs size 8
Parachute Adams sizes 10, 12 and 14
Elk Hair Caddis Size 12
It is that simple. If the trout will not rise to a Cicada then the Parachute Adams will do the trick. To finish it off, you need an Elk Hair Caddis just in case...
Just remember to count to three before striking on slow takes!
