Epoxy-Eyed Jigging Smelt
Epoxy eyed jigging smelt are trout and salmon killers on lakes but are also used for wet lining and harling. The general idea when jigging for trout, is to use a rig with three flies and a 1/2 to 1 ounce weight at the bottom. Fly size depends on the body of water you are fishing but most tend towards using smaller flies in the size eight range.
The epoxy eyes give these flies the X factor as they look more realistic when the fish has a closer look.
These same flies are perfect for river fishing and fly casting too. Look, I am a river and lake edge guy and I do not jig a lot. But my friends and clients who do are doing very well indeed with these flies. Even though some are not smelt imitations, I call them that to keep them together; it's all about the epoxy eyes!
If unsure what you want to use, pick up a jigging fly pack and figure out what works for you.
