This block was last culled in 2022. Peter got in touch saying he saw a new mob of peafowl. This small block of trees is shaped like a horse shoe. Dan and first-timer, Kevin, went one way and Jarno and I went the other. We saw a mob of two dozen birds almost right away. We decided to leave them for a while as the new 1/4 moon was pretty bright and the birds could see us. We gave them a wide berth and checked out the rest of the block. We did not see anything else with the thermal but had a few target shots to check my Ruger 10/22. It was jamming a lot on the last hunt so I gave it a good clean with CRC in the action. It cycled perfectly and was on target. I had not adjusted my Pard thermal scope since the previous season. We went back an hour later and got in position. The first big peacock went down and the birds were jumpy as it was a bright night. We shimmied along on our butts to line of the following shots. About 10 flew away but we did shoot 12 of them. Then we got four more in another tree near by. Dan and Kevin shot five possums and one big peacock. I thought they would have found more peafowl but that's the way it goes sometimes. We were on our way home by 10 PM. I like these little mid-week hunts close to home....
