So we got the call to come and cull the peafowl a few years ago now. After meeting Wendy we emailed back and forth a bit about peafowl of course. I asked her if she liked paddling then offered her a day trip. Well, it took almost two years to make it happen and guess what?
So Blair and I took Wendy and her son, Kayden, out to look for a fallow deer. Neither one had shot an animal, let alone a gun, before. We had a few practice shots at the range with the .22 and the .223. We talked about safety and how to operate the semiautomatic .22 in particular. Kayden learned how to load the clip then taught Mom.
Wendy turned out to be the guide as it was her farm. Kayden got his first three hares in four shots. It was pretty impressive alright! Blair and I were really happy as we love eating hare.
After a bit of a stalk, Kayden had a chance for his first shot at a deer. He was laying on the ground with the .223 and bipod. The fallow presented its head and neck at 50 m. We told him if he felt comfortable, take the shot. He did and shot it perfectly in the head! This kid was buzzing!
Then it was Wendy's turn. We had a buck really close but could not quite get it lined up in time before it spooked. Shortly after, Wendy was lined up on a good hind at 160 m. She took the shot perfectly like a pro and down it went. Wendy had just killed her first deer.
Wendy and I walked back to get the truck and she shot her first two possums on the way. What a night and I was very happy to be part of it.
