The forecast was not good leading up to the decision to drive to Marton from Whakatane. We were there last November. There were a lot of peafowl and deer we could take. I think we got 87 peafowl, 10 deer, 20 hares and the same number of rabbits. Freezers were running low so we decided to go to at least get some venison. I called Brian to come up again with Dan to get the deer. Brian is a Sambar culler who lives about an hour away.
The other Dan and I focused on peafowl. We got 70 the first night. The boys got two reds and a Sambar.
The next day was pretty busy for me. After the best feather product was collected, we finished the breasts and thighs by dark.
We were back out for peafowl by 7 PM. The boys left well before dark to look for deer. We got six big peacocks after spending hours searching. We met up with the boys who were empty handed. They went back out again but had no luck.
The weather happened to be perfect both nights, except for a little wind and moon on the second night.
We did wind up with seven possums. They had declared the place possum free the year before and we did not see a single one. This time was different.
The next day I processed the birds, a hare and even the one bunny we got. We cleaned up and headed home early afternoon. We really should have stayed for another night as there was plenty left to do.
