We were contacted last summer about a growing turkey problem. This was actually a referral from John's place just down the road, where we culled all of the peafowl the year before. Dan and I got there about seven PM. Doug gave us a map and showed us where the main mobs were. They also had a lot of possums, hares and bunnies they wanted dealt to. The wind was absolutely howling and the main mob of turkeys were jumpy. We took the first 15 or so and the rest flew. We spent the next couple of hours tracking them down. With 30 turkeys in the boot, we decided to leave the other mob for the next visit, especially as it was a long way to them and the track was just too wet to navigate safely.
I had just finished six days of pheasant processing and I was not keen on another plucking marathon anyway. So we had a little drive and walk around. We cleaned up 17 possums, 10 hares, two bunnies and a couple of magpies. We were on our way home just after midnight. Stayed at a mate's place in Tauranga then processed feathers the next morning. Wings and tails were packed up to be processed the next day. Dan processed the meat off the birds and we each took half of the hares. We really cherish hare meat. The backstraps are as good as any venison eye fillet. Mine are marinating for a few more days. The front legs are in a Thai red curry in the crockpot and the thighs will be minced today (15/7) with the ones we got last night.
We would come to your farm just to harvest hares!
