Earle Road Again

So Blair and I went back for a second go at the turkeys. It was a last minute decision and off we went. We started at the high spot that we did not make it to last time and it was quite a hike to get there. There were 23 turkeys and we had just shot a couple of hares. I might add that I think I had just made the best shot of my life on a running hare. There was a perfect background and got it in the eye at 50 m. Since Blair was just a carrier, I warned him that we should just select about a dozen to cull as the carry back was going to be a challenge. He told me to take them all so I lined up with the .22 with the thermal scope. Luckily or unluckily, I shot 12 and the rest flew away. Funny that as turkeys do not normally get flighty but the same thing happened the first time we were there a few days before. That usually indicates the birds have been hunted on a regular basis before.

The carry back with 12 turkeys and two hares was definitely a challenge. Then again, who needs a gym? So warmed up, we carried on. More hares and more possums and a few bunnies met their ends. Then we went back to where we started the first hunt and cleaned up all but a few turkeys that flew away.

It is so funny that I said it was a referral in the last blog. Blair and I were sure John's peacock block was well up the road. But it turns out the blocks connected at some pines. Both times I spotted lots of peafowl roosting on the neighbouring property but did not know if we were allowed there. Doug told us it was all good but by the time we were going back the drizzle had settled in. So we called it just after midnight.

Lambing is starting there within a week so we will have to let it rest for a bit. But we will be back next door for those peafowl as soon as practical.

Oh, and the cool thing is that we got the pesky possum that was causing trouble near the house. I am sure there will be more to replace it.
