Frank found me from our You Tube videos. He wanted to fish with me. He has been coming to NZ for years fishing around Taupo and the Big O. He wanted something different; he got it.
Being an x commercial fisherman and an avid recreational fisherman, he and his wife are living a pretty cruisy life travelling around the world.
It was showering during the drive there but was overcast to start. That turned into full sun by late morning.
We went down the river. Frank started wit a spinner, a Panther Martin. He caught his first fish on his third cast after missing two. It was a stellar start. Big rainbow after big rainbow came to the net. It was a bit silly.
We pulled out his fly rod and did a bit of nymphing. We had a green epoxy bomb wit a hare and copper nymph below. He got three big rainbows in a row. It was a little silly.
I changed the trailing nymph to a pheasant tail flashback and he caught some more.
Then was the time for a big deer hair cicada with a bead head pheasant tail nymph wit rubber legs below. It is a deadly combination. Again, it was a little silly with lots of takes on the dropper and the cicada too.
After we beat the crap out of the rig. We changed to a deer hair cicada black and put a bead head zug bug below. That was silly too. When the zug bug fell to pieces a bead head half back did the job. It was all a bit silly.
Then we got to one of the foam lines below the bridge. I put on a parachute pheasant tail with a four pound tippet and he caught the last rainbow of the day.
It was all a bit silly. He probably landed 40 fish. There was only one brown for the day; it is usually a pretty even mix. Safe to say, Frank will be back! Bloody great fishing now until the rains come in April or May.
