So, we were just there the day before with Dan who wanted to fish the lake again. We had a great day. Am I the only one who wants to check out the river?
I was sure Larry would want to go down the river in the canoe. He chose the lake again. It was raining when we set off around 9 AM. It was a slow start but we were having action. Larry seems to like fishing in the rain.
Although raining, there was little or no wind which made it quite pleasant. Larry picked up a couple of fish on the bh krystal olive bugger, which is the go to fly for all lake edges. But, as we are proving, it does not matter what you use.
We came to the bay (river right) just before the island. I have been fishing this lake for 20 years and never had any luck in this bay. There is a creek running into it via several small falls. Larry said we may as well try again. He hooked and lost a fish and I was impressed. We went to the creek mouth and the low lake conditions exposed a nice, clear creek bed leading into the weeds.
Still, I saw no fish as I paddled towards the flowing water. Suddenly I saw a large brown trout, then two, then three. We were right on top of them but they did not seem to spook. After a missed strike, Larry hooked up to a beauty brown. We landed and released it using the Go Pro.
So then Larry had tangles in his reel so I dragged his line along the beach and put it in the water so it would not get dirty. He caught a brown that had eaten his fly lying on the sand in very shallow water. It had swallowed the hook so I had to leave the hook in for the release.
I have named the area "Larry's Bay".
We carried on and the fishing just improved. The area where river meets lake produced some feisty rainbows. Plenty of good browns were landed throughout the day.
Then of course the northerly came up so I had to paddle against it all the way back to the car park at the dam. Larry landed 18 trout and lost another 10 that were hooked for a time. That is potential record breaking stuff.
Years ago before the big flood of 2017, Larry held the record with 22 landed but then Dan smashed it with 25 landed the next year.
We are now fully recovered from the flood of 2017 and we are poised to set a new record in 2022! Could it be you?
