So the day before, Dan and I had a stellar day on Lake Aniwhenua. Jack wanted to go back to the canal and have another try. Since I was last there I made a plan to sight fish the edge of the canal. We saw a lot of fish last time but did not land any. We got there and I realised I had left my fly rod at home, doh. I geared up one spinning rod with a soft bait and put on and olive damsel nymph below a ball sinker on the other. We saw fish following again but just not actively taking. After Jack climbed up a bank and got five wasp stings, I borrowed his rod. There were trout following alright. Then I focused on just the edge of the canal and caught a couple of rainbows. The ball sinker was too heavy but we will adjust that in the future. This canal has a lot of fish in it and I am going to explore it further.
I reckon sight fishing the edge working upstream or wet lining down stream along the edge will produce the goods with the fly rod. Stay tuned...
