So yesterday I was supposed to take Steve to target trout with cicadas. The weather did not behave. We had heavy rain and crazy winds predicted. We called it off the day before. It was a good call as it poured and blew. Some said we were made of sugar. But in our lives, we pick our days to suit the lifestyle.
Dan had booked me in for today. He wanted an afternoon start as he had great action at the Aniwhenua Dam a couple of weeks before. We got there around 1 PM. The southerly was blowing hard. The dam was spilling water but everything was clear above. Remember, after they spill water, there will be trout in the pools below. They only want to travel back upstream so they will be easy targets. Go get them before they get skinny.
It was a fight to direct the canoe into the wind and Dan caught a good rainbow within minutes of launching at the Black Road campground. It was caught on the staple bead head krystal olive bugger in a size 6. Then we put on a bead head olive bugger in the same size and Dan got another good rainbow for the bin.
We simply went out from the campground, fought the wind and fished the weed bed edges. I put the anchor down a lot to slow our progress.
We went up the creek by the dam to get out of the wind but there was no relief. Even with the wind, trout were rising all over the place. It kept our attention alright.
I had a crack with a dragonfly larvae and a damsel nymph and both worked.
Dan went back to the krystal olive bugger and caught a couple more. The wind was not going away and we called it a day around 7 PM.
Life is good.
