The woolly bugger has to be the most versatile trout fly pattern available. They are used successfully in just about any situation. Whether you are jigging, harling/trolling, lake shoreline fishing, wet lining in the river or just casting a fly to a rising trout, the woolly bugger catches fish.
I personally like to fish them as we travel down river in our canoe. I paddle and the lucky person in front drops a bugger into every place a trout may be waiting. It is pure adrenaline and teaches people how to cast quickly and accurately.
I am a big fan of the bead head krystal buggers. I use them on a floating line targeting shallow or weed bed edges. The bead gives some vertical movement when needed. The krystal buggers without the bead are pretty much neutrally buoyant so best fished with a sinking line if you want to get deeper, quickly. I use them them on a floating line around the edges but slowly
I added the white bugger for something different. They will work when baitfish are being targeted, moths are on the water or trout are chasing emergers and you fish it fast!
